Health Awareness Campaigns



Bowel Cancer Awareness (April). Over 35,000 people in the UK are affected, as with most cancers early diagnosis saves lives. The focus on this campaign is prevention, spotting the symptoms and screening.  Bowel Cancer UK aim to educate us so that This cancer drops to a lower position (currently second) in the table of cancer death in the UK. Depression awareness (April) The Depression Alliance's campaign this year will focus on the myths and misunderstandings surrounding the condition and remove the stigma of being depressed. Call: 0845 123 23 20

Multiple Sclerosis awareness (April). What impact does MS have on sufferers and their family.This year's campaign aims to focus the debate on how to improve services for people with MS, and to raise the profile of what is currently available in the UK. Autism awareness (April). An isolating condition that affects the whole family not just the individual. The campaign aims to help people to better understand the challenges of living with Autism.  Helpline: 0845 055 9010.

Save a Baby Month (May) The Foundation For The Study Of Infant Deaths campign wants us to know that Cot death is still the biggest killer of babies over one month old in the UK. Their campaign will  highlight how to reduce the risk of cot death (Place your baby on its back to sleep, cut smoking in pregnancy and don't let anyone smoke in the same room as your baby  and  be aware that the safest place for your baby to sleep is in a crib or cot in a room with you for the first six months) Since starting this FSID campaign the UK's rates of cot death have fallen by 75%.  Yet still needs to be done to save more babies. Fruity Friday (May) Raising awareness of the links between diet, nutrition and cancer prevention. The World Cancer Research Fund wants you to get fruity. Call 020 73434200 for fundraising ideas.

Foot Health month (May) Don't ignore your feet! Take a good look and think aboutthe health of your feet, either by visiting your local chiropdist, podiatrist or even reflexologist.

Dystonia Awareness (May).  A neurological disorder where involuntary muscle contractions lead to abnormal movements and postures. This condition is difficult to diagnose and many patients remain untreated because their symptoms go unrecognised. National Smile month (June) the campaign to increase public awareness of the benefits of better oral health care.   The British Dental Health Foundationwants to improve awareness of, and access to, the means of maintaining better oral health, particularly amongst disadvantaged groups (those on lower incomes, the disabled, the elderly and ethnic minorities) For further details call 0845 063 1188

National liftshare Day (June) Promoting car-sharing, both nationally and locally, as a cost effective and environmentally friendly form of transport, which is available to everyone free of charge. For safety tips  and how to find a travel buddy Call Liftshare on 08700 780225.

Child Safety Week (June) The campaign to raise awareness of the causes of childhood accidents and encouraging effective action to reduce the high toll of injury and in worst cases death. The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) is a charity that offers information and assistance for parents, grandparents, carers etc. Contact Number: 020 7608 7363


Tampon Alert Week: Toxic Shock Syndrome (June) The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the possibility of developing Toxic Shock Syndrome during tampon use as well as to offer support to TSS survivors and bereaved families. Contact Tampon alert on 0161-748-3123.


Everyman Male Cancer month (June) set up by the Institute of Cancer research as male awareness of male only cancers is very low, to learn more please read our article on male only cancers. The charity states that 90p in every pound donated goes directly into research. Various events including the men only 5k run "Keep your eye on the ball" are being held to raise awareness. National Infertility Day (July) this campaign hopes to raise awareness of infertility (including all the surrounding issues)as well as providing support and information to patients, their friends and families. Stress awareness: This year's campaign aims to educate indiviudals and businesses alike on the impact of stress and how to reduce its impact on our lives. Some stress is ok, but overload with stressful situations and its impact on your health and  well-being can be harmful. Migraines affect up to 15% of the UK's population (the majority -approx 66% being women) The impact of having a migraine can impact the working lives of so many. The Migraine Action association can be contacted on 01536 461333. For direct help to address and manage your migraines please contact us

The Big Squeeze focuses on bladder conditions: incontinence and cystitis, and the impact this has on so many women, who are unable to live life to the full.  Urinary incontinence affects 1 in 3 women, and cystitis impacts 1in 5. World Breast Feeding Week : The global effort to encourage breast feeding and promote the benefits of breast milk. Over 11 million infants die from preventable causes around the world and according to research approx 1.3million of these could have been avoided had those children been breastfed. Whilst this is an global initiative, if you are having problems here in the UK did you know there are many resources to help you address your breastfeeding issues and needs: your midwife, your health visitor, your local NCT or the NCT helpline on 0870 444 8708 (not 24 hours), ABM's voluntary counselling service (24 hours) on 0870 401 7711. If you are having trouble getting through to someone, and if it is not an urgent matter (our clinic appointments take priority, we can only respond to calls/emails at certain times of the day) we have a number of other contacts we would be happy to put you in touch with, please contact us.

Anger awareness: an issue with wide ranging consequenes on society. The British Association Of Anger Management aims to empower us with the right 'tools'in order to calm ourselves and douse the flames of anger.
